Icy soup helps you cool down no matter how hot it gets outside


When the sun beats down and the temperature starts to rise, nothing is better than a cool bowl of milmyeon with crushed ice. People are already lining up in front of milmyeon restaurants with the hottest part of the summer season just around the corner. Korea''s famous summer dish is considered a delicacy in Busan, which has some of the best milmyeon in the country. Once you try the chewy noodles ensconced in an ice-cold broth, you''ll be hooked on this unique dish.

Following are some of the top spots in Busan to get a tasty bowl of milmyeon.


Milmyeon Jeonmunjeom


A lot of visitors and expats here tend to confuse milmyeon with a similar dish called naengmyeon. The former is made with noodles made from flour, while the noodles in the latter are typically made with various ingredients including buckwheat.

One of the best places to get milmyeon is at Milmyeon Jeonmunjeom near the main hotel road in Haeundae. This famous restaurant is famous for making great good and its clean eating environment. The milmyeon here costs 4,000 won ($3.3), while the excellent mixed noodle dish can be had for the same price. Steamed dumplings are also popular. 1226, Jung 1-dong, Haeundae District. Gaegeum Milmyeon


This place serves up some of the best gaegeum-style milmyeon in Busan, drawing legions of visitors daily. The restaurant opened in 1966, so it''s a bit Spartan and antiquated on the inside.

But don''t let that fool you: the milmyeon is top-notch. During the summer, you''ll often find people standing in a line out front despite sweltering heat. The main milmyeon and mixed noodle dish is 4,000 won for a small size and 5,000 won for a large dish. Take-out is available as well.

Take subway line No. 2 to Gaegeum Station, exit 1. Walk 200 meters toward Seomyeon, then take the first alley on the left in the Gaegeum street market.

Bonga Milmyeon


This eatery is a practical, simple spot to enjoy bare-bones milmyeon at an attractive price: just 2,000 won. While many people come for the cold milmyeon, a fair share visit for the mixed milmyeon - which is doused in a spicy sauce - as well. 

For those with a big appetite, you can get a large bowl for just 3,000 won.

Take subway line No. 2 to Mt. Geumnyeon Station. Walk towards the Suyeong District Office and then head toward the entrance to Gwangalli Beach. The restaurant is on the left. Namcheon 1-dong, Suyeong District. Opening hours: 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (051-628-7577)


Halmae Gaya Milmyeon


For a unique milmyeon experience, head to this restaurant, where the featured dish contains noodles made with corn starch. The mixed milmyeon features pepper paste sauce, cucumbers and an egg - all in a stainless steel bowl.

As an added treat, the milmyeon is served with a beef leg bone and medicinal herbs in the broth. The famous dish costs just 4,000 won.

Take subway line No. 1 to Nampo-dong Station. The restaurant is located 10 meters south of the former Mihwadang Department Store building at Gwangbokno. Opening hours: 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (051-246-3314)


Gukje Milmyeon


This is one of the most famous milmyeon restaurants in Busan, which becomes abundantly clear in the summer when it fills to capacity frequently. The milmyeon here is spicy, giving the dish its unique taste and flavor. The restaurant uses Australian beef bones to liven up the broth. Water milmyeon costs 4,000 won, while the mixed noodle version is 5,000 won.

Take subway line No. 1, Busan National University of Education, exit 5. Walk about 100 meters toward Dongbu Insurance street. Opening hours: 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. (051-501-5507)
